The fall of the Berlin Wall, the financial crisis of 2008, growing inequalities of income and wealth, the return – after a long eclipse – of China to the forefront of the global economy, and the climate crisis all form the backdrop to a remarkable upsurge in research in the history of capitalism. As the New York Times pointed out, not without irony, in 2013, “in History Departments, It's Up With Capitalism”. This lecture series offers the opportunity to discuss how these approaches contribute to renew our understanding of key themes in social and economic history.
